Local residents have their say on plans for new neighbourhood centre in Sneinton Dale.

Nottingham City Council and Nottinghamshire Police are asking residents of Sneinton, Bakersfield and Colwick for their views on future plans for policing and libraries in the Dales Ward.

The City Council and Nottinghamshire Police are working together on proposals to develop a joint service centre at the existing Sneinton Police Station.

There will be a public meeting on 2 December at 6.30pm at St Christopher’s Church Hall, Trent Road, Sneinton, where local residents can talk to local councillors, Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner Chris Cutland and the police about the proposals.

The building would be refurbished and extended to provide modern and accessible facilities for the local community, including a police base, new library and access to other council services.

Police and Crime Commissioner Paddy Tipping said: “Sharing facilities with other local services makes good sense as it means the public will benefit from convenient, accessible and cost-effective services and retain their local policing presence which people have told me is very important to them. In addition, local policing will be even more visible as mobile technology becomes the norm, with officers needing to spend less time in the actual police station.  It is a win win situation and as I live in the area, these are local services that my family use. We will be winners too.”

“These plans will offer many benefits for local residents, retaining the Police neighbourhood beat team in the area whilst improving local facilities through a high quality, accessible modern library and access to advice about a range of City Council services.”

To do this, the Council would like to relocate Sneinton and Bakersfield libraries into the refurbished and extended building on the Sneinton Police Station site. This easy-to-access location is on a main bus route, and near to other community resources such as the Oliver Hind Youth Club, Sneinton Children’s Centre, GP surgeries, local shops and within walking distance of the many community centres.

These plans form part of wider joint working arrangements between the City Council and Nottinghamshire Police, building on the close working relationship these organisations have developed in recent years through Nottingham’s unique approach to neighbourhood policing – which sees Council Community Protection Officers (CPOs) and the Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) working side by side.

Residents wishing to have their say on the plans can complete a consultation questionnaire online at www.nottinghamcity.gov.uk/consultation

Copies of the questionnaire are also available at Bakersfield or Sneinton Library. The consultation is open until 16 January 2015.
