Nottinghamshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner Paddy Tipping has added his support to a petition seeking to make attacks on police dogs a specific offence.
There are no laws in place to specifically protect against attacks on Police Dogs and currently an assault against a Police Dog is merely treated as Criminal Damage – roughly akin to kicking a car.
Urging people to sign up, the Commissioner said: “I support this petition wholeheartedly. The dogs are a key part of the policing family and they do a valuable job. I hope that with enough support we will see a crime against a Police Dog treated as seriously as a crime against a regular Police Officer. They earn that right.”
Commissioner Tipping has joined fellow PCCs Bob Jones (West Midlands) and Matthew Ellis (Staffordshire) in signing the petition, which currently stands at around 10,000 signatures.
The Petition can be accessed here.
