A new high-quality CCTV camera has been installed in a busy Nottingham park as part of a six-figure project to tackle crime and make people safer.
The camera has been fitted in Bridlington Street Playground in Nottingham to prevent and detect robbery and theft in the area and reassure park users.
It has been funded through the City’s Safer Streets project and will be live-monitored at Nottingham City Council’s existing CCTV control room based at Woodlands in Radford, which has direct access to Nottinghamshire Police via radio link.
The camera, which cost £3,500 to install, will help to deter crime as well as secure vital evidence for police investigations.
Nottinghamshire Police and Crime Commissioner Caroline Henry secured £432k from the Home Office’s Safer Streets Fund to improve safety in the Arboretum and Lenton Triangle areas of the city.
The funding is being invested in a series of physical and environmental improvements in the areas to combat crime including free security upgrades at 500 residential properties and free Ring doorbells for up to 375 homes in the city.
Welcoming the new camera, Commissioner Henry said: “Fear of crime can stop us doing the things we love and enjoy and that’s not fair or acceptable.
“Making our public spaces safer and preventing crime are top priorities for me. We have listened carefully to the concerns of local people and we hope this new CCTV camera will boost their confidence as they enjoy this family park.
“CCTV is a hugely successful means of deterring crime, as we have seen across other areas of Nottinghamshire. Working with our partners, we will ensure no effort is spared in our ambition to make the city safer and stop criminals seeing our communities as easy pickings.”
Cllr Neghat Khan, Portfolio Holder for Neighbourhoods, Safety and Inclusion, said: “People should always feel safe when using our beautiful parks and fantastic green spaces in Nottingham. Hopefully this CCTV camera will deter trouble and antisocial behaviour and help people feel safe and secure whilst using the park.”
Chief Inspector Amy English, of Nottinghamshire Police, added: “We are really grateful that funding has been provided for this camera through the Safer Streets initiative, which will be a boost for crime prevention and reassurance.
“It will be monitored live and can link in to officers on the ground to prevent offences and capture evidence to help detect crimes.”
Safer Streets funding has been used to recruit a Burglary Reduction Officer post to liaise with burglary victims and their neighbours to assess their security needs.
It is also being use to enhance policing with focussed ‘action days’ to disrupt, deter and prevent criminality in the area and develop local intelligence and recruit Community Champions through the City Council to help deliver crime prevention advice to students and the wider community.
