Police chief to answer questions in one-hour live webchat

Nottinghamshire Police and Commissioner Paddy Tipping is to host a live webchat to answer questions from young people about policing issues.

Paddy Tipping will be joined by Nottinghamshire Police Sgt Debbie Barton, who specialises in youth issues, for the question and answer session, which will take place on Tuesday, February 19 from 7-8pm.

The Commissioner has listened to young people in Nottinghamshire who say they prefer to talk to the police via social media. The live webchat is therefore one of many events planned to encourage young people to take more responsibility for policing in their area and help officers work more effectively with them to solve crime.

Commissioner Tipping is keen to hear young people’s views on a range of community safety issues, in particular:

  •  Mobile phone theft and young people’s fear of crime
  •  Young people’s experience of the night-time economy and its link to crime
  •  Alcohol consumption and nightclubs (From young people over the age of 18)
  •  Social media and policing – are young people reading the Commissioner’s Face book updates and Tweets? If not – why?

Paddy Tipping said: “To truly fulfil my role as Commissioner I need to understand the public’s perception of crime and find out how we can make life better for everyone in our communities.

“Engaging the younger generation is a traditionally challenging task as from experience they are less likely to attend public meetings. We know that young people are increasingly using social media as a way of interacting and I want to utilise the same mediums to be able to connect with them.

“By making sure our crime safety messages are communicated more effectively, we can build confidence and reassurance in policing and also ensure everybody has an equal opportunity to share their views and their expectations of us

“We know that social media is helping us from an operational perspective by giving prominence to our appeals and requests for information. We are equally hopeful that by using these channels for feedback we will develop a stronger relationship with the public.”
